Fishing Lake Iliamna
Fishing in and around the Lake

The fishing in Lake Iliamna itself can be good at times in several areas. One such place is out in the lake, near the outlet.

The actual current and moving water of the Kvichak River extends quite a bit into the lake. Sometimes the very largest Arctic Char will lay right where the current starts, which is out in the Lake itself.

The Rainbows, as well as monster Arctic Char will hang out where the current actually starts in the lake. Depending on water levels this may be 1/4 to 1 mile into the lake. We sometimes troll in these areas as well as anchor and cast, depending on the water depth.

We motor out into Lake Iliamna and then drift back into the Kvichak River, casting toward the shore. It's surprising how close to the shore the big Rainbows are caught.

We fish a few seemingly random stretches along the edge of Lake Iliamna, however they're not really quite as random as they seem as we have spent years discovering these areas. Many non-productive hours and days have gone into fishing around the edge of the lake, however when you discover a stretch that fishes well, it's all worth it.

The Lake Iliamna Drainage have some huge Arctic Char as well as big Rainbows. It various times throughout the year the giant Char can be caught near the lodge and also many stretches of lake shore. They especially like the immediate area where a stream flows into Lake Iliamna. It doesn't even have to be a large stream, just a small flow will attract and bring in the Arctic Char.

We use 4-wheelers to access a few places near the lodge to fish some more remote and private waters. We leave Clearwater Lodge on 4-wheelers and a short time later, 15-30 minutes, arrive to fish some undisturbed waters for Northern Pike, Rainbow Trout, and Arctic Grayling.

The shore of Lake Iliamna is more like an ocean front beach, (see below) so we can travel up and down the shore on 4-wheelers. The 4-wheelers and open beach allows us to easily fish a few more hard to reach places such as the lake in the picture above.

Along with the 4-wheelers on the beach, we also use our boats to cruise up and down the lake shore to hit the hot spots. It doesn't take long to go up the lake to an area where several streams flow into the lake. The boat ride is usually nice and quite unforgettable.

With the sun shining and the Fall colors, a ride up Lake Iliamna is quite unforgettable!

Our heavy-duty and very reliable boats, with Honda motors, gives us quick access up and down the Lake. This access allows you to catch Northern Pike, Arctic Char, and the Leopard Rainbows of Bristol Bay.

Some of the Rainbow Trout in Bristol Bay are darker and much more heavily colored than others. These usually occur in the slightly warmer waters of small lakes and in the small streams running into and out of these lakes. These are the Leopard Rainbows of Bristol Bay.
