Fishing the lower section of the Braids,
about 4 1/2 miles long

The Lower Section of the Braids are about 4 1/2 to 5 miles long. This area has the famous "Grassy Islands of the Braids" with many small channels.

As you work your way down to the bottom of the Braids, these channels flow back together and the islands get larger.

The runs in these areas are longer and sometimes a littler deeper. This area holds many of the biggest Rainbows in the river during the sockeye run such as the picture below illustrates.

While we do catch many large Rainbows in the 30 plus inch range, and that is what everyone talks about when mentioning the Braids of the Kvichak, we also catch hundreds and hundreds of smaller Rainbows throughout the summer. These range in the 25 to 30 inch class. Catching these fish throughout the day, keeps you going and is good practice for the big 30-37 inch Rainbows!

The small channels of the Lower Section of the Braids are equally great to wade fish in as the upper section is.

There are spawning sockeye salmon everywhere which draws in the Rainbows.

The Rainbow Trout hold behind the spawning Sockeyes, Chums, and Pinks in this area. They can be sight fished to while wade fishing the smaller channels.

The Guides of Clearwater Lodge know the channels that are consistently the top producers. As you work your way down the Lower Braids, you may stop many times to hit the favorite runs of your Guide.

Your Guide will be there to show you exactly where to cast and how to make your presentation for each stretch or run of water.

We catch lots of average size Rainbow Trout, such as the picture to the right shows, as well as an occasional monster.

As you reach the bottom of the Lower Braids, the channels start to come back together are get larger. Most of them are still shallow and are very wadeable.

The larger islands of the bottom end of the braids are great to spent an afternoon on as you have access to many different runs and holes as you work you way up and down the islands.
