On the Beach

Depending on the time of year, some of our very best fishing (the very best in the world) is on the beach in front of the lodge. Many times our Guests don't have to travel anywhere by boat or airplane to fish the top spot in Alaska. The beach in front of Clearwater Lodge is the top spot for opening day Rainbow Trout fishing.

At this time of year, the outgoing salmon smolt are heading out to sea from Lake Iliamna. In the lake they are spread out making it harder for the rainbows to catch them, but as they enter the Kvichak, in front of the lodge, they must school up in the narrow entrance to the Kvichak River. Of course the Rainbow Trout know this as well and lay in wait.

The Huge Rainbow Gorge on the Smolt!

The huge rainbows gorge on the smolt as they try to pass the waiting rainbows. This is one of the reasons the rainbows get so large in the Kvichak. There may be 300-500 million smolt migrating to the ocean during a good year. We fish from the shore as well as from drifting boats. We also anchor up at times as well.

Clearwater Lodge's boats are heavy duty welded Aluminum with Honda motors, and are kept in front of the lodge on the beach. It so easy for you and your guide to jump in and drift a few times in front of the lodge, like in the picture below. This is where some of the big ones are.

It really is hard to believe how good the rainbow fishing is right at the lodge. There's not too many places where you have a great shot at a 30 inch trout right in front of your Guest Room.

The fishing for sockeye salmon in front of the lodge is world class as well during the sockeye run.

Often the term "world class" is overused, however what term other than "world class" can be used to describe the largest natural sockeye run in the world right out your front door. One year, 598,000 chrome Sockeye Salmon went by the lodge in one day. This is 6.9 sockeyes per second, and 414 sockeyes every minute.

The Sockeye Salmon stream by the lodge for over a month.

When you stop to tie on a new fly, over 1,000 Sockeye swim by. If you stop for a quick 15 minute coffee break, over 6,000 Sockeyes swim by. This is what we mean by "World Class Sockeye Salmon Fishing", and this is all in front of the lodge, just feet from your Guest Room, or Guest Cabin door.

The fishing is great on the beach in front of Clearwater Lodge

Many, many times the fishing is so great on the beach in front of the lodge that some of our first year Guests just stop fishing and stand there in amazement and watch as these fresh from the ocean, chrome Sockeye Salmon, swim past them in the crystal clear water.

Even local wildlife, such as the fox, like to check out the fishing on the beach in front of Clearwater Lodge

With the world's largest natural Sockeye Salmon run swimming by in front of Clearwater Lodge, the Alaska Fish and Game Department have set liberal limits on keeping Sockeyes. The limit is 5 per day, which gives you lots of fresh fish to take home for your family and friends.
